Apios americana

Twining herbaceous vine. Brown-purple flowers in dense clusters. Sweetly scented. August – September. Full sun to part shade, moist soil. Legume. Edible tubers raw or cooked. Our plants are Long Island native. Occurs throughout eastern N. America from New Brunswick to Florida. Zone 6, at least.
