Apios americana

Twining herbaceous vine. Brown-purple flowers in dense clusters. Sweetly scented. August – September. Full sun to part shade, moist soil. Legume. Edible tubers raw or cooked. Host plant for the silver-spotted skipper. Our plants are Long Island native. Occurs throughout eastern N. America from New Brunswick to Florida. Zone 6, at least.
