Curcuma longa
Forms a clump of handsome, canna lily-like leaves, 3 – 4′ tall. Thick, branching rhizomes are the source of the well-known spice. Enormous culinary and medicinal value. Also used as a potent yellow dye. Pale yellow flowers on short spikes in summer are also edible, prepared as a vegetable. Best in moderate shade. Prefers moist, rich soil. Dig up rhizomes before winter, and store in a cool, dry place. Zone 7b.
